Emmaus Leeds is a homelessness charity based in Leeds. Offering support to people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion, Emmaus focuses on regaining lost self-esteem and building confidence by offering a home, work and an opportunity to progress. Supporting up to 26 homeless people at any one time, residents are provided with an en-suite bedroom and facilities in a purpose-built community building. In return, residents are expected to work 40 hours for the Emmaus social enterprise – collecting second-hand items and upcycling and selling on through a network of Emmaus charity shops. The model is designed to improve confidence and build employability skills, enabling residents to move on into permanent employment and a secured tenancy.

What Corecom do

Corecom supports Emmaus Leeds through its ongoing team volunteer programme. Staff are encouraged to take time out from work to support a charity of their choice each year and a number of the team make Emmaus their charity of choice.

Volunteering days have included providing one-to-one mentoring to homeless people and those who were previously homeless to build confidence and esteem. Mentoring sessions reflect the aim of the Emmaus business model, providing guidance and training in CV writing, job application skills and basic IT, enabling residents to move nearer to their goal of secure employment.

Staff have also embraced the opportunity to support Emmaus’ Christmas Day dinner – giving up their family time to serve 75 homeless people with a hot meal, refreshments, gifts and conversation – spreading some festive love.
