How To Craft The Perfect CV that Recruiters Will Notice in 2025

When it comes to job hunting, your CV is your first impression.

With recruiters (and AI tools) manually scanning hundreds of CVs every day, crafting a resume that grabs attention and showcases your potential is essential for opening doors to new job opportunities in 2025.

In this guide, our expert Recruitment Consultants share eight actionable CV tips to help you create a standout resume for the competitive tech job market – bringing you one step closer to securing your dream role in tech.

1. Start with a Strong Professional Summary

Your CV’s professional summary is your elevator pitch.

In just a few sentences (we recommend 3-4 sentences max), summarise who you are, what you bring to the table, and what role you are looking for. This section of your resume should be concise, emphasising your key skills and relevant experience while using strong, action-oriented language to showcase your value.

PRO CV TIP: Try to avoid using overly generic statements like “I am a hardworking professional”; instead, be specific.

For example, “Results-driven [current job title] with 7+ years of experience in [responsibilities], specialising in [key specialist areas]. Seeking to leverage my expertise to [main goal] of a [organisation type] organisation.”

2. Tailor Your CV to the Job

In a technologically advanced era, a “one-size-fits-all” CV rarely makes the cut. Fully review the job description and align your CV to highlight your skills, experiences, and achievements most relevant to the role. Use keywords from the job posting, as many recruiters use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter CVs – and lastly, be honest about your experience!

PRO CV TIP: Create a “master CV” with all your experiences and skills, then pick and choose the most relevant points for each application.

3. Structure Your CV for Readability

A well-organised CV is easier to read and makes a better impression. Use clear headings, structured bullet points, and consistent formatting throughout your CV to ensure it looks polished and professional.

A typical CV structure will include:

  • Contact Information: Make sure your phone number, email, and LinkedIn profile are all up to date.
  • Professional Summary: Brief, impactful, and keyword-rich with relevant experience, words, and phrases that match the job description.
  • Work Experience: List roles in reverse chronological order by date.
  • Skills: Highlight both technical and soft skills relevant to the job.
  • Education: Include degrees, certifications, and relevant coursework (if applicable).

PRO CV TIP: Use additional sections like “Projects”, “Volunteer Experience”, or “Languages” if they add value to the role, to stand out even more!

4. Design Matters

High-quality content is important, but presentation is also key.

While we love to manually check your CVs, many hiring managers use an Automated Tracking System (ATS) to efficiently manage their recruitment process.

To increase the chances of your CV passing through an ATS, use standard formatting and include relevant keywords and skills from your previous roles that align with the job description. Try to avoid using images, charts, or unusual file formats as this might “confuse” the system.

PRO CV TIP: Save your CV as a PDF to preserve its formatting.

5. Focus on Value Added

When writing your CV, make sure to provide a clear and detailed record of your role’s responsibilities and avoid any tendency to gloss over them.

Many hiring managers focus on value-added and what you can bring to their company, so it’s important to demonstrate how you’ve contributed to success in measurable ways, such as driving revenue, reducing costs, improving efficiency, problem-solving, or enhancing team performance.

Take it from our team – it’s more effective to focus on the specific values your responsibilities in your previous role have added, rather than simply listing tasks from a previous role.

PRO CV TIP: Start each bullet point with a strong action verb, such as “developed,” “led,” or “implemented”.

“I see a lot of profiles where people say [we did this, we did that], but it’s important to showcase what you have done for a business.”

6. Balance Depth and Conciseness on Your CV

Research shows that recruiters spend up to 15 minutes reviewing a CV before deciding if it is suitable for a vacancy. Maintaining depth within your resume while trying to keep it concise may be a struggle, but it is important to remember that you don’t just have to limit your CV to one page.

Move relevant buzzwords into the “Work Experience” section of your resume and clearly demonstrate how you’ve used them within a role.

PRO CV TIP: Feel free to write up to two pages for your CV if your experience warrants it!

“If you have that experience and depth within your career, don’t just limit it to one page.”

7. Proofread your CV… Thoroughly.

According to Noble Desktop (2024), typos and grammatical errors can unfortunately undermine your professional credibility in business-related writing. Resumes are no different. A polished, error-free CV not only highlights your attention to detail but can also strengthen your credibility as a candidate.

Before applying for roles, take the time to carefully review your CV or use a professional proofreading tool like Grammarly to ensure that your CV stands out for the right reasons.

PRO TIP: Use tools like Grammarly or ask a friend to review your CV to catch mistakes you might have missed.

8. Seek Feedback

Before submitting your CV, get feedback from experts, mentors, or a professional CV writing service as constructive criticism can help you refine your resume further.
