Leeds selected for Channel 4 Headquarters news article 31/10/2018

Leeds selected for Channel 4 Headquarters

It has been formally announced today that Leeds will be the new home of Channel 4, housing its new regional HQ. The City Region has successfully been selected, beating off competition from Manchester and Birmingham; the final three in the shortlist.

Channel 4 is a publicly owned, commercially funded broadcaster. The company’s Chief Executive, Alex Mahon, and the Channel 4 Board, visited 13 cities and regions for presentations and discussions during the pitch process earlier this year, followed by comprehensive discussions with six subsequently shortlisted cities.

Roughly 300 jobs are expected to relocate to Leeds from London. Bristol and Glasgow have also been confirmed as locations for two smaller creative hubs.

Six topics, one community

TestBoss, our award winning networking event for the Test Management Community in Leeds was last week, offering Senior Testers the chance to collaborate, share ideas and learn from each other in an informal setting.

Six topics were covered at the event ranging from ‘Implementing Test Policies and Procedures’ through to ‘Selling the Value of Testing’ and ‘Methods of Keeping the Team Interested and Engaged’.  The Test Management Community in Leeds pitched together to find solutions to common problems that Test Managers face in work.  The content of these discussions will be released as exclusive whitepapers in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled.

Rick Hughes, Founder of TestBoss and on the Board of Directors at Corecom Consulting said:

“2016 has been another excellent year for the TestBoss series and we signed off with a great event last week. We’re now fortunate enough to be getting Test Managers approaching us with the problems they’re facing in the hope the event can help.

“It was another lively session and the Test Management Community that TestBoss has helped form came up with some excellent solutions to a range of interesting Test Management problems.  We’ve had a number of attendees tell us they’ve been requested by their respective businesses to report back on the event findings, which we’ll be publishing as white papers in the coming weeks.

“Thanks to the Yorkshire Test Management community and everyone at Corecom who are making this success possible.”

Craig Wilmot, Senior System Tester at Skipton Building Society said:

“I recently attended the TestBoss event that Rick Hughes and Corecom Consulting hosted in Leeds.

It was the first time that I have attended an event of this type and I was really impressed with how well organised it was and the diverse range of topics that were covered.  The group exercises were particularly useful and were a great opportunity for me to see how other test leads/managers approached different situations.”

Photos from the evening can be found here.

If you’re new to the community, this video should give you a taste of what to expect from the evening.

TestBoss is the only event in Yorkshire designed to bring the Test Management Community together.  It is an invitation-only event for leaders within Software Test Management to debate, discuss hot topics, learn from reputable and established speakers whilst networking with like-minded individuals in a friendly environment.

TestBoss to feature interactive discussions

Our award winning networking event for the Leeds Test Management community is coming up on 22 November 2016 in Leeds City Centre. TestBoss starts at 6:00PM with drinks and networking and finishes at 9:00PM.

The structure of the evening will follow the same format as the last TestBoss event where we focused on the everyday challenges that Test Managers face in the workplace.  As part of the registration process, attendees are requested to input any challenges they face at work and the most popular challenges will be selected to be discussed and analysed in groups on the evening to provide workable solutions.

Some of the topics that have been submitted so far include: how to sell the value of Testing when formal Testing has never been done before, managing relationship with Service Delivery teams, available tools for Manual Testing and innovating test processes, to name a few. There’s still time to submit your requests, simply follow the link at the bottom of this article to register your interest.

The last TestBoss proved to be a real success, you can read more about it on our website.

Speaking ahead of TestBoss Jonathan Sanderson, Managing Director at Corecom Consulting said:

“Since the last TestBoss was such a success we have decided to implement more of the same with regards to the format and structure of the evening.  The interactive lightning discussions enabled attendees to solve numerous common Test Management problems that the Leeds attendees had.

“What was great about the last event is that every attendee got involved in the group discussions which meant that we received a broad range of solutions, contributing to the value adding nature of our events.  Although this event is a near sell-out, we still have a couple of spaces remaining, so if you’re a Test Manager, or know someone who is, register today!  Simply complete our online form, the link to which is at the bottom of this article.”

Is time travel possible? Find out here…

This year marks a century since the first time the UK wound back the dials at the end of British Summer Time. That’s right, the time has finally come to turn the clocks back by one hour on Sunday 30 October 2016 at 2AM. You have known the ‘Spring Forward, Fall Back’ mnemonic since you were about five years old but you still can’t figure out if this one means you get an extra hour in bed or not…

Now although most mobile phones and electronic devices will turn the clocks back automatically for you, it is definitely worth checking if you’ve got something important to do on Sunday morning, because you will end up being an hour early, and miss out on an extra hour in bed?!

Each year there seems to be some confusion over turning back time, so why do we do it?  Well, the clocks change by one hour in Autumn in an attempt to make the most out of the light.  It all started in 1916 when the First World War was underway in an attempt to reduce coal consumption at a time when supplies were needed for the war effort.

The clocks going back marks the end of British Summer Time (BST) and reverts back to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Here’s a selection of things that could happen if you forget to change your clocks back:

  • You’ll miss out on an hour of sleep, and no one wants that!
  • Those of you with trust issues be prepared to spend an hour on Google (smartphone or not), checking to see which clocks you can truly trust…
  • Turning up an hour early for a first date, did someone say keen?

To avoid any embarrassment be sure to leave yourself plenty of time in the morning and double check with Siri as to what the correct time is, she won’t be wrong… Or will she?

National techies day! 03/10/2016

National Techies Day

The day is finally here to celebrate our most beloved techies… It’s National Techies Day!

What is National Techies Day?

National Techies Day is a day that we dedicate to celebrating techies around the globe for making our world a better place. Techies not only fix printing problems, speed up networks and ultimately revive our PCs from the dreaded ‘blue screen of death’, they also make day-to-day life so much easier for us, and for that we are extremely grateful.

On the 3rd October students are encouraged to choose a career in technology. Launched in 1999, the National Techies Day was initiated by Techies.com and CNET Networks to encourage kids to embrace computer science and choose a tech way of life. In America, it was expected that 60% of new jobs would require advanced technology skills that the population didn’t have, hence the appeal for more techies.

So what is a techie?

Techies are those wonderful people who know their way around the technologies that we use in everyday life like the backs of their hand. Most people know technology for its functionality, but not techies, they know technology inside out, back to front, you name it. Techies are passionate deeply engrossed in all things tech, they are the first to design new tech and the first to own it. Techies are the ones who keep the world as we know it moving forward.

How to celebrate Techies Day?

Celebrating Techies Day involves praising those who keep the world moving forward for us. We should not only celebrate successful techies like Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, we should be praising each and every techie that makes our life so much easier.  So send an email, card or letter of thanks to all the techies you know and let them know that you appreciate them! And for all you techies reading this article, we thank you for pulling us through all the hard times, I think today is the perfect occasion for you all to treat yourselves to the latest bit of tech you’ve been eyeing up over the last few months, you deserve it.

Corecom Consulting is excited to announce that DevBoss, our award-winning networking event for Yorkshire’s Software Development Managers, is coming up on 18 August 2016.  The event will run, as usual, from 6:00pm – 9:00pm in central Leeds.

As announced, David Naylor, Senior Product Manager at Cascade HR will be our Guest Speaker for the evening, delivering a presentation titled: ‘On board yourself – how to land and deliver in your dream job’. In this opinion led talk Dave will take you through his experiences in landing a new role or promotion and the steps to take in order to deliver.

On-boarding moves beyond the first induction and involves a commitment from the company and employee to deliver value into a role. Personal on-boarding is about strategically planning your moves and focusing on what you can do before your start and then planning your 30, 60 and 90-day plan. This talk will lean on David’s own personal experiences of using this approach as he took the next step in his career, with the aim to give you the ideas and tools as you take your next step.

Andreas Xiarchos, event host and Head of Software Development at Corecom Consulting, said:

“David is clearly well suited to be the Guest Speaker at DevBoss, and with 12 years’ experience in the industry, he has a lot to offer in terms of his own experiences in Development.

Dave Naylor - Guest Speaker 04/08/2016

DevBoss announces David Naylor as Guest Speaker

Corecom Consulting is excited to announce that DevBoss, our award-winning networking event for Yorkshire’s Software Development Managers, is coming up on 18 August 2016. The event will run, as usual, from 6:00pm – 9:00pm in central Leeds.

We’re delighted to welcome David Naylor, Senior Product Manager at Cascade HR, as Guest Speaker for DevBoss. David is an experienced technology professional and agile evangelist with over 12 years’ experience developing cutting edge enterprise-ready software solutions within the full Microsoft Technology Stack. With a career that started in Software Development, moving through a series of roles including Operational Support Manager, Senior Product Owner, Product Development Manager and now Senior Product Manager, David has a unique blend of technical, operational and commercial experience.

Speaking ahead of DevBoss, David said:

“Having attended both the DevBoss and TestBoss events for the past year I have always enjoyed the events and found the sessions extremely useful.  Corecom has been very generous in hosting these events and when I was asked to present at DevBoss I felt compelled to contribute and support them this year.  Hopefully I can continue to add to the success of the events by presenting some engaging and thought provoking content, based on my experiences.”

Having graduated from Teesside University in 2004 with a 2:1 in Software Engineering, David has continued to further his education with industry recognised qualifications in ITIL, Scrum and Product Management.

Following a successful placement year working for the Global Leader DuPont Knowledge Management, David started his professional career with BTL as a Junior Developer but soon found himself working as a Senior Developer and was instrumental in the development of BTL’s flagship assessment software Surpass™. Surpass™ has now been used to deliver over 12 million high stakes on screen assessments and this is built on technology that David helped define and deliver.

David built and managed the Live Services team, made up of DBA’s, Developers and Service Technicians where he developed real empathy for end user issues and excellent problem solving skills.

Turning around a failing agile transformation he quickly became the Senior Product Owner, responsible for managing a team of 4 Product Owners helping to define and implement the business strategy. During this time, David had his first exposure to Product Management and started to gain an understanding for the commercial side of a business.

David joined Cascade HR, one of the UK’s leading providers of Human Capital Management Software in April 2015. In his role, David was responsible for the Product, Development and Quality Assurance teams reporting to the Technical Director. He moved into senior management within four months of his arrival, following the departure of his immediate manager. Along with the executive management team, David was responsible for defining the business strategy and driving this forward through the creation and management of the Product and Technical Roadmaps. Most recently, David took on the role of Senior Product Manager where he is responsible for ensuring the business has the correct commercial focus, competitor and product awareness to succeed. David has successfully implemented the Scrum Framework into the development team and the team are now making constant improvements to this.

Team Yorkshire Day 01/08/2016

Happy Yorkshire Day!

Although we believe that Yorkshire Day should be celebrated 365 days of the year, unfortunately, it’s not, and is celebrated for just one day.  However, if you’re from Yorkshire, that day is today!

To celebrate, staff at Corecom Consulting will be embarking on a Yorkshire pudding eating frenzy throughout the day courtesy of Operations Manager, Gemma Robinson.  We’ll also be getting into the true spirit of Yorkshire by wearing flat caps, whilst drinking good ‘ol Yorkshire tea all day long.

As it is Yorkshire Day, we thought it would be fitting to share a bit of classic Yorkshire with you and we’ll start with some brilliant Yorkshire phrases.

Yorkshire phrases

1. “Put t’wood in t’oil” (Put the wood in the hole) – Close the door

2. “10 while 11” – 10 o’clock until 11 o’clock

3. “Mardy” – moody

4. “Scran” – food

5. “Dinner” – lunch

6. “Tea” – dinner

7. “Twerk” – which has two definitions:

  1. To dance using predominantly your bum, usually sexually.
  2. Where people in Yorkshire go Monday to Friday 9-5pm.

These are just a few typical Yorkshire sayings that you may well be accustomed to.  Other terms can be found in the Yorkshire dialect glossary created by the BBC.

Yorkshire is a county of innovation, as this list proves:

  • Yorkshire Tea
  • Yorkshire puddings (of course)
  • Wensleydale cheese
  • Samuel Smith’s Brewery – if you don’t know this, you should…
  • Tetley’s Brewery
  • Yorkshire Terrier
  • Bassets, Thorntons, Rowntree’s and Terry’s

Yorkshire has also produced some pretty big names…

  • Kevin Keegan and Gordon Banks
  • Brownlee brothers
  • Jessica Ennis
  • Jeremy Clarkson
  • Brian Blessed
  • Neville Longbottom AKA Matthew Lewis
  • Harold Wilson, who famously stated:

“I’m an optimist, but an optimist who carries a raincoat.”  As much as I love Yorkshire, I have to sympathise with the former British Prime Minister on this occasion.

Corecom Consulting would like to wish you all a very happy Yorkshire Day, and remember ‘ya can tek’t lad outta Yorkshire but ya can’t tek’t Yorkshire outta’t lad!’  Proud to be Yorkshire.  Like what you’ve read?  We’d love to hear from you, email us at contact@corecomconsulting.co.uk
