Jonathan Sanderson to chair first virtual APSCo Yorkshire Business Forum

Corecom Consulting’s Managing Director, Jonathan Sanderson, will chair a new virtual roundtable programme led by the international trade body for the professional recruitment sector; the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo).

‘In the Frame’ is the virtual version of the body’s sector and regional meetings and forums, which has been launched as a result of all member meetings being postponed due to COVID-19.  The new programme, which launches on Wednesday 20 June, will enable member communication and engagement. As the named Chair, Jonathan will be running the meeting and structuring the discussions. Jonathan said:

“The launch of ‘In the Frame’ is welcome news for the industry during what is an uncertain time for many and I am really looking forward to engaging with my fellow APSCo members.

“The focus of the session will be around the key issues and challenges facing the sector, forum and region and providing members with the opportunity to reach out and communicate with one another in a roundtable discussion format.

“It will be particularly useful for those who are running their businesses in isolation and who are less able to access peer to peer contact.”

Jonathan’s appointment of Chair of the APSCo Yorkshire Business Forum was announced on 27 June 2019. APSCo, the distinctive voice of the professional recruitment sector and trusted badge of quality, provides expert support for recruitment companies committed to excellence.

The Yorkshire Business Forum, one of the trade body’s professional networking events, provides an opportunity for its members to network with their peers, discussing prominent topics affecting the recruitment and employment sector on a regional, national and international basis. APSCo has selected leading recruitment experts to chair each Forum.

Our Inspirational Boss is ‘Leader of the Year’ Award Finalist

Jonathan Sanderson, Managing Director at Corecom Consulting, has been named ‘Leader of the Year’ finalist for a prestigious Investors in People Award.

The shortlist comes as recognition for Jonathan’s sheer passion for his company, his role, employees, the industry and for employability, demonstrated through his commitment to increasing the number of women in technology roles, sharing his knowledge and expertise, supporting charities, university students and the local community and to increasing the health and wellbeing of his employees.

Jonathan has been named an ‘inspiration’ for the following:

Increasing the number of women in technology roles

Jonathan hosted the fourth community event for women in technology in March 2019, joined by Ann-Marie Gilbert, Digital Coach and Trainer at Google:

“We recognise that young females are not choosing the technology sector because of a lack of female role models and a lack of advice and guidance for women in technology. We will continue to encourage conversations around women’s involvement in the technology industry and to showcase successful women such as Ann-Marie, in order to bridge the gender gap further.”

Jonathan Sanderson, Managing Director – Corecom Consulting

Female leaders who attended the event included those from Burberry, Lloyds Banking Group, EE, Sky Betting and Gaming and the University of Huddersfield.

Jonathan has used the discussions held at the event to inspire his customers and other women in technology. Each discussion has been written and published into white paper format. Jonathan has conducted podcast interviews with leading women in technology. These are available to watch, engage with and share via the Corecom Consulting website, YouTube and iTunes.

Supporting charities and the local community

Jonathan was honoured by MPs for his community work and raising awareness of the refugee crisis at the Moonlight Trust Excellence Awards in December 2018. Described as a leader who goes above and beyond supporting the local community, Founder and CEO, Noushin Raja acknowledged that Jonathan has helped Moonlight Trust move forward with their mission to help brighten lives by eradicating poverty and promoting peace love, justice and equality.

Jonathan is committed to increasing the employment prospects of students in the local community. He is a mentor to the STEM Power student society at Leeds Beckett University; a group of young women undertaking science, technology, engineering and mathematics related subjects.

Mentoring, rewarding and improving his employees

Jonathan Sanderson is committed to health and wellbeing and provided his employees with lunches at Michelin starred restaurants, days away, holidays to France and Palma de Majorca, Junkyard Crazy Golf, team building exercises, meditation, yoga classes and celebration days. He is a talented mentor, continuing to deliver guest lectures and provide one-to-one support to the previously homeless and students at local universities. Jonathan encourages every employee to dedicate at least one day each year to charity.

Jonathan fully appreciates that his team plays a pivotal role in the company’s vision. He has implemented an Employee Health and Wellbeing Strategy, which aims to improve employee morale, job satisfaction and physical and emotional wellbeing.

Jonathan regularly delivers guest lectures and chairs group discussions in partnership with course tutors and representatives at the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University on a host of topics, including networking, how to utilise LinkedIn, job applications and preparing for interviews.

  • an inspirational leader
  • someone that lives and breathes the organisation’s values

Jonathan Wins National Recruitment Boss of the Year Award

Jonathan Sanderson, Managing Director at Corecom Consulting, has been awarded ‘Recruitment Boss of the Year’ at the prestigious Marketing and Digital Recruitment Awards. He was presented with the national award in recognition of his dedication to corporate social responsibility and people development.

Described by the Master of Ceremonies at the awards evening as “not just a boss, but a mentor too”, Jonathan has exerted sheer passion for his team, his role within his business, the industry and for employability.

Award Judge, Marilyn Davidson, said:

“Jonathan Sanderson’s commitment and dedication to his company, the technology industry and to raising employment prospects in the community is an inspiration.

“This award acknowledges his contributions to business innovation, increasing the number of women in technology roles, raising graduate prospects in the region and upskilling underrepresented community groups; key challenges within the IT sector.

“Jonathan is a talented mentor who has overturned the usual stereotypical assumptions that come with recruiters.”

Amongst Jonathan’s recent contributions to the IT industry include increasing the number of women in technology roles. Jonathan hosted the second annual free networking event for Women in Technology, WITBoss, in June. This was in support of the national WISE initiative; a campaign for gender balance in science, technology and engineering.

His community contributions include delivering free lectures and workshops to raise graduate employment prospects at local universities, including working with the University of Leeds’ Widening Participation Team this year in order to raise the employability prospects of underrepresented groups.

Jonathan also hosts an annual free networking event aimed at improving the employability prospects of university students across Yorkshire; GradBoss. This event has attracted students from all West Yorkshire universities. The objective is to introduce prospective local employers to students who are due to graduate soon, are looking for careers in tech and to make connections. In addition, he supports and mentors the Student Computing Society at Leeds Beckett University, providing day to day support and mentorship to students, organising for industry specialists to go in and speak to the Society and support them with employability initiatives.

His charitable contributions include delivering IT training sessions and CV writing workshops at Emmaus Leeds; a local charity that provides a home and meaningful work to formerly homeless people (Companions). This is as well as assisting with clothes sorting, furniture collections, painting and upholstering at their shop.

Jonathan, who was also successfully shortlisted for Entrepreneur of the Year at the Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards, said:

“It’s a real honour to accept this award and to have been recognised by my peers. This just tops a fantastic year for the company and our community partners.”

Jonathan established Corecom Consulting in 2008, at 28 years old. His entrepreneurial qualities have enabled the company to compete with national and global players in the market. His bold leadership and creative, innovative thinking has positioned Corecom Consulting as the ‘employer of choice’ ahead of longer established recruitment businesses in order to attract new business, new candidates and new sales staff. He has shown a commitment to addressing the growing level of skills shortages in technology and to his employees, who are encouraged to take at least one day out of company time to volunteer in the community.

“It’s a real accolade to receive recognition for the part Corecom Consulting and I play in the community.

Best Bosses in Tech named in aid of Boss’ Day

Our bosses really do go through a lot for us so what better day to celebrate their hard work and resilience than on National Boss’ Day?  This year the day is celebrated on Monday 17 October 2016.

Many bosses are fab at recognising the great work that their employees do, but do we ever stop to do the same for them? When was the last time you gave your boss an (unpatronising) pat on the back? Think about it – bosses have responsibility for a whole host of things – who recognises their hard work?

In aid of the day, here’s a shout out to five of the most innovative and influential bosses in tech:

1. Eric Schmidt is an American software engineer, businessperson and the Executive Chairman of Alphabet Inc. When he interned for Bell Labs, he completely re-wrote the Lex software program in order to generate lexical analysers for the UNIX computer operating system.  Schmidt has been CEO of Novell, Google and has served on numerous academic boards and within industry.  Click here to read more about Eric Schmidt.

2. Evan Williams is an American computer programmer and internet entrepreneur who has founded several Internet companies.  He began his IT career at O’Reilly Media in a marketing position but eventually became an independent contractor writing computer code, which led to freelance opportunities with the likes of Intel and Hewlett-Packard.  Williams introduced web application ‘Blogger’ and was formerly CEO of Twitter. Click here to read more about Evan Williams.

3. Shigeru Miyamoto is the creator of the most infamous video games of all time. Miyamoto created Nintendo games such as Mario, Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Wii series and The Legend of Zelda. Click here to read more about Shigeru Minamoto

4. Mark Zuckerberg is an American programmer, Internet entrepreneur, executive and philanthropist.  He is the Chairman, Chief Executive, and Co-Founder of social networking website Facebook, which he launched with his college roommates from Harvard’s dormitory rooms.  Zuckerberg is among the 100 most influential people in the world. Click here to read more about Mark Zuckerberg.

And we can’t forget to mention our very own, well loved, Boss…

5. Jonathan Sanderson is an award winning entrepreneur and Managing Director of (our very own) Leeds-based IT Recruitment Consultancy, Corecom Consulting.  Jonathan founded the company in 2008, at the young age of 28. His audacious enterprises have enabled the company to reach above and beyond the expectations of the industry and receive numerous award shortlists.  Sanderson himself has been shortlisted for ‘Recruitment Boss of the Year’ for the second year running by the Marketing and Digital Recruitment Awards (MARAs) – take a look here

Click here to read more about Jonathan Sanderson.

Boss’ Day was established by Patricia Bays Haroski in 1958 as a day for employees to thank their bosses for being kind and fair throughout the year. She introduced the day when she worked for her father as she felt that his hard work was rarely recognised. Unfortunately, in recent years, it hasn’t been as widely celebrated as employees tend to feel that company gift-giving should flow down rather than up (mostly because bosses earn more than employees).

The idea of today is that it strengthens the bond between employer and employee:

“It’s important to recognise that Bosses are people too.  They may be in a position of authority but they also have a great deal of responsibility.  It’s days like today that we’re reminded of the importance of teamwork between bosses and employees.”

Gemma Robinson, Operations Manager, Corecom Consulting

So be sure to share the love and to thank your boss for all they do! We certainly have.

Jonathan Sanderson's 10 Rules for Success 23/06/2016

Jonathan Sanderson – Ten Rules for Success

Last but not least in Corecom Consulting’s ‘Leadership and Success Series’ is Jonathan Sanderson, Managing Director of Corecom Consulting, an award-winning IT recruitment specialist. Here are Jonathan’s top ten rules for success:

Tell a good story

“All my favourite leaders are exceptional at telling stories and inspiring people with the tales of their success or the lessons they teach. You should have built up a pool of analogies for every occasion.”

Lead by example

“Leaders need respect and you won’t gain respect if you’re not prepared to demonstrate you are willing to do what needs to be done.”

Share your vision & values

“People achieve much more when they are working towards a cause rather than just an objective.”

Know what your team wants

“You can’t motivate your team without knowing what they want. Understanding how to meet their personal needs will reward you greatly.”

Have fun

“People want to follow those who are having a good time. If you enjoy what you do it makes it a lot easier to inspire others. True leaders are passionate about what they do.”

Ask for feedback

“The only way you can improve is to ask for feedback. People who are following won’t naturally give you feedback and if you’re not receiving feedback regularly you are doing something wrong.”

Take accountability

“Leaders need to show that they are human and that it is OK to make mistakes. Demonstrate that you are prepared to live to your values and use feedback to improve.”

Take an interest in your team’s success

“You need to help coach your team to be the best that they can be. Helping others grow is the best way to help yourself grow and if you want people to succeed you need to have a real passion for it.”

Delegate effectively

“The art of leadership is being a good delegator. The team needs responsibility to help you achieve yours and your company’s goals. I have failed in the past by trying to show that I can do it all. You are helping people develop individually and professionally if you let them learn by completing new tasks.”

Take time to think

“At least once a week, I sit down for 20 -30 minutes with a piece of paper, a question at the top and my first bullet point. I make sure that there is always a new empty bullet point to prompt a new idea. I often find that my best ideas come towards the end of my thinking.”

Jonathan Sanderson has recently been featured in Leeds Beckett University’s ‘Leading 360 Series’ for the Centre of Governance, Leadership and Global Responsibility which can be viewed here. Corecom has also written blogs for Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Elon Musk’s ten rules for success which you can read through the links provided.
