DevBoss announces David Naylor as Guest Speaker

Corecom Consulting is excited to announce that DevBoss, our award-winning networking event for Yorkshire’s Software Development Managers, is coming up on 18 August 2016. The event will run, as usual, from 6:00pm – 9:00pm in central Leeds.

We’re delighted to welcome David Naylor, Senior Product Manager at Cascade HR, as Guest Speaker for DevBoss. David is an experienced technology professional and agile evangelist with over 12 years’ experience developing cutting edge enterprise-ready software solutions within the full Microsoft Technology Stack. With a career that started in Software Development, moving through a series of roles including Operational Support Manager, Senior Product Owner, Product Development Manager and now Senior Product Manager, David has a unique blend of technical, operational and commercial experience.

Speaking ahead of DevBoss, David said:

“Having attended both the DevBoss and TestBoss events for the past year I have always enjoyed the events and found the sessions extremely useful.  Corecom has been very generous in hosting these events and when I was asked to present at DevBoss I felt compelled to contribute and support them this year.  Hopefully I can continue to add to the success of the events by presenting some engaging and thought provoking content, based on my experiences.”

Having graduated from Teesside University in 2004 with a 2:1 in Software Engineering, David has continued to further his education with industry recognised qualifications in ITIL, Scrum and Product Management.

Following a successful placement year working for the Global Leader DuPont Knowledge Management, David started his professional career with BTL as a Junior Developer but soon found himself working as a Senior Developer and was instrumental in the development of BTL’s flagship assessment software Surpass™. Surpass™ has now been used to deliver over 12 million high stakes on screen assessments and this is built on technology that David helped define and deliver.

David built and managed the Live Services team, made up of DBA’s, Developers and Service Technicians where he developed real empathy for end user issues and excellent problem solving skills.

Turning around a failing agile transformation he quickly became the Senior Product Owner, responsible for managing a team of 4 Product Owners helping to define and implement the business strategy. During this time, David had his first exposure to Product Management and started to gain an understanding for the commercial side of a business.

David joined Cascade HR, one of the UK’s leading providers of Human Capital Management Software in April 2015. In his role, David was responsible for the Product, Development and Quality Assurance teams reporting to the Technical Director. He moved into senior management within four months of his arrival, following the departure of his immediate manager. Along with the executive management team, David was responsible for defining the business strategy and driving this forward through the creation and management of the Product and Technical Roadmaps. Most recently, David took on the role of Senior Product Manager where he is responsible for ensuring the business has the correct commercial focus, competitor and product awareness to succeed. David has successfully implemented the Scrum Framework into the development team and the team are now making constant improvements to this.

Brexit and Contractors 12/07/2016

What does Brexit mean for contractors?

Ever since the shock decision that Britain will leave the European Union (EU) there has been little said about the plan going forward.  This may be confusing if you’re a contractor or freelancer and you may well be left concerned about your future, especially as there have been warnings about the economic consequences of Britain leaving the EU.

Uncertainty

As no set plan has been put into motion yet, it is clear that Britain is in a state of uncertainty with regards to the next couple of years.  This has a negative effect on businesses whom, like many, dislike uncertainty.

That being said it has emerged that, at least for contractors, the uncertain nature of Britain’s future could end up boosting demand for contractor workers.

Dave Chaplin, CEO of Contractor Calculator said:

“It is during this time of uncertainty that contractors will benefit from businesses hiring contingent workers in order that they can manage risk.”

In the past when we’ve encountered doubt and uncertainty in economic environments, there has been an increase in demand for hiring contractors rather than permanent workers, and there is nothing to say that this won’t happen in this instance.

This shift could place contractors in the driving seat and could well encourage more experienced professionals to make the leap to contracting.

New Opportunities

The Association for Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (IPSE) also believes that Britain leaving the EU brings lots of prospects for the UK’s contractors and freelancers.

Chris Bryce, IPSE CEO said:

“Today’s historic result has huge implications for the UK’s 4.7 million self-employed workers and they’ll be wondering what it means for them.

“IPSE believes this new era can and must be taken as an opportunity for the UK.  Priorities should be new global trading arrangements, cutting burdensome regulation on small and micro businesses and ensuring that Britain has the most flexible and attractive economy in the world.  With these priorities, the UK can be a place where freelancing and contracting can thrive.

“New circumstances always bring new opportunities for freelancers.  We should be optimistic about the future and IPSE will continue to push the importance and value freelancers bring to our economy.”

It is clear that although uncertain times are upon us, contractors can feel safe in the fact that uncertainty will lend itself to their nature of work and that contractors may well benefit from the vote to leave the EU.

Bridging the gender gap in IT across Yorkshire 27/05/2016

Bridging the Gender Gap in IT across Yorkshire

Leeds-based recruitment consultancy, Corecom Consulting, launches a new event aimed at bridging the gender gap in the IT industry.

WITBoss was launched last week and welcomed speakers from WISE Campaign and BCSWomen Specialist Group, talking about the lack of diversity in tech companies and the initiatives in place to bridge the gender gap.

The networking event enticed 24 attendees from Yorkshire-based IT companies to learn from reputable IT professionals sharing their experiences and educating female professionals on how to overcome gender prejudices.

Jonathan Sanderson, Managing Director of Corecom Consulting said:

“Gender equality is clearly still an issue in tech industries nowadays.  Ever since a Goldman Sachs course that Helen Wollaston of WISE was speaking at I’ve been intrigued by WISE’s offerings and the importance of creating role models to promote young females in science, technology, and engineering.

“Since the recent birth of my daughter I’d love to think that there were equal opportunities for her to work in IT and progress to Board Level, therefore gender equality needs to exist, and there needs to be the right people at the top encouraging this.”

Helen Wollaston, Chief Executive of WISE said:

“Digital jobs in the North grew ten times faster than non-digital jobs, according to a new report by Tech North.  One in 20 of the workforce in the North is employed in digital and the jobs are well paid.  Digital jobs in Leeds pay £5.50 per hour more than non-digital.  I want women to be part of this growth.  It is good for women and good for business.”

Gillian Arnold, Chair of BCSWomen and listed in the top 10 most influential women in IT 2015 by Computer Weekly said:

“Shockingly, we make little progress on increasing the numbers of women in technology roles in the UK.  Whilst I believe that much of the issue is for the employers to deal with, I know that women in tech will want to get active and boost their own chances of getting the best career they can get.

“The session offered hints and tips to the attendees to help them find ways to break through the glass ceiling and progress to Board Level within their organisations.”

Following the success of the networking event, Corecom Consulting is set to launch another WITBoss event later this year, providing females with further advice, and a wider network of like-minded professionals.  WITBoss has enabled attendees to develop strong affiliations with influential IT leaders and companies like WISE which promotes and encourages young females into the technology sector.

WISE is accepting nominations for its 2016 annual awards, recognising inspiring organisations and individuals actively addressing the core concerns of WISE: promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics to girls and women.

WITBoss: Promoting Women in Technology

The absence of women in technology careers has been observed since at least 2005 and a $4 billion annual investment is now in place in the UK to rectify the gender imbalance, according to Deloitte’s TMT Predictions 2016 report.  Despite this injection of cash, the number of women in IT has only increased from 17-18% in 5 years between 2010 and 2015.

It’s clear that despite the actions taken by the government and private sector in the UK to bridge the gender divide in IT, there are still huge concerns when it comes to recruiting, retaining and educating women in the sector.  Deloitte’s TMT Predictions for 2016 state that fewer than 25% of IT jobs in developed countries will be held by women by the end of 2016.  The reason behind this figure is due to a number of subconscious gender biases.

Gender imbalance in IT originates with education; there are simply not enough females taking computer related studies from an early age.  This leads to only one out of every twenty applicants being female, according to half of the companies in a 2014 study among UK companies.  Deloitte argues that there are still subconscious gender biases where both men and women are twice as likely to hire a male over a female even if they both have the same qualifications and experience.  This is a problem which negatively impacts the gender divide in technology companies.

Commenting on the challenges women face when entering STEM occupations, Helen Wollaston, Chief Executive of WISE Campaign said:

“There is always more to do but we should recognise the momentum behind the recruitment of women into the IT and other professional STEM occupations in the UK.  UK Professional IT employment grew by 10.2% overall in 2014/15; employment of women into the sector grew by a very encouraging 36%.

“WISE has doubled our corporate membership in the past 12 months, as more and more employers recognise the positive impact women can make on their business performance and want to be part of a growing movement for change.  We offer a 10 step framework, led from the top, to create an environment where women will want to work, can be their true selves and therefore give their best.”

Corecom Consulting is launching a new event under the ‘Boss Series’ called WITBoss, designed to bring together women in technology across Yorkshire to network, debate, discuss hot topics, and learn from reputable and established speakers who are leaders in the industry.  WITBoss is an exclusive, invitation-only event that will be held on 19 May 2016 at an intimate venue in Leeds City Centre.
