Peeping Behind the Tech Curtain with Microsoft 365 and Azure Specialist – Scott Riley
Ahead of CloudBoss, we’re ‘Peeping Behind the Tech Curtain’ with one of the guest speakers, Scott Riley. We asked him for an insight into his role and what we can look forward to taking away from the event on 20th February 2020.
Scott is the Founder and Consultant at Cloud Nexus; a tech company which helps people move to the cloud and secure their data. As a specialist in Microsoft 365 and Azure, he established the consultancy to provide B2B advice and strategy on technology solutions to SMEs. He will be presenting alongside his colleague, Rob Blount; Microsoft Evangelist at Cloud Nexus. Here’s a peep at Scott:
- Tell us a bit about your role at Cloud Nexus and what it entails?
“We have a great team here at Cloud Nexus but we’re a young company which I founded last year. The whole idea is around helping businesses move to the cloud, make the most of the technology they’re paying for and work with their customers in awesome new ways. Every day has a different challenge! My time is mostly spent talking to people, about their business challenges and how we can help them with technology. I do a lot of talking!”
- What projects are you currently working on and using what technologies?
“We’ve got some really interesting projects on at the moment! We’re helping businesses move away from crunchy, slow, old IT systems and move into new solutions on Microsoft 365. We’re advising CIO’s and CTO’s on technology strategy, using some of our experience to help them avoid pitfalls and build great roadmaps for IT which supports their business. We’re training users how to work efficiently with our Modern Workplace Bootcamps.
Although we are based in Leeds, we just completed a project for a business in Australia – it can be really varied!”
- The title of the presentation is: ‘How to move your business to the cloud, get it right and stay secure (without costing a fortune!)’ – why did you decide to call it this?
“There’s a lot of uncertainty when it comes to moving to the cloud.
#1 is Security and that’s completely understandable. You can’t look at the news without seeing another hack which has exposed customer data and ruined the reputation of a large business. Security is a key concern and so it’s important to understand that you can move to the cloud AND stay secure.
#2 is all about cost. Cloud presents a really useful pay-as-you-go consumption model which can vary every month and grow as you need. This is great for tech teams but worries the FD/CFO a they don’t have fixed predictable costs which they are used to. There are ways to bring this under control which we’ll explore in the session.”
- What are the key things that you are hoping event attendees will come away with?
“I’m hoping that everyone takes away something useful that they can put into action for their own cloud strategy whether that’s around good ways to move, ways to control cost or ways to be secure and stay secure.
It’s not a super techy session, so it’s perfect for business decision makers or Heads of IT who are thinking about the move to Cloud.”
- Are there any particular tools or techniques that you will focus on in your presentation?
“We’ll be focussing on the Microsoft Azure Cloud specifically in this session. If people are thinking about AWS or Google for their cloud then there are some elements which will still apply but this session is definitely more valuable to those who are planning to use Microsoft Azure or those who haven’t decided on a platform yet.”
