Improving Employment Prospects of Leeds Beckett University Students
Leeds-based IT recruitment company, Corecom Consulting, has been given the opportunity to provide guest lectures for the students at Leeds Beckett University after forging a partnership with the University.
Corecom Consulting has provided students at Leeds Beckett with employability workshops in a bid to raise the employment prospects of the soon to be graduates. Corecom delivered a presentation to IT students titled ‘Creating an IT portfolio’. This workshop covered hints and tips on how to create a successful and attractive IT portfolio, using and providing real-life portfolios and showing features that are attractive to recruiters.
CV writing is a common uncertainty in the minds of students, so Corecom provided a CV writing and application forms completion techniques workshop, educating students on what to include in a CV, key tips, and information on the layout of the document.
In a rapidly evolving society the use of LinkedIn as an application screening method is becoming increasingly popular to employers. Jonathan Sanderson, Director at Corecom delivered a workshop covering techniques on how to create a LinkedIn profile that will make students stand out from the crowd.
When asked what the most useful thing she took away from the session was and what activities she will be undertaking as a result, Claudia Lohe, MSc Marketing student at Leeds Beckett University said:
“The most useful thing I have taken away from the session is to ask for employer testimonials more actively as they are great references for past work I have completed. I also learnt that the skills section on my LinkedIn page is highly important and a way to show my skill set to potential employers.
“The activities that I will undertake as a result of the session will be to look at and connect with groups that are relevant to my interests and career ambitions. This is a good way to learn more about the specialisms of the market.”
Jonathan Sanderson, Director at Corecom Consulting said:
“It’s rewarding to be able to give something back to the University that taught me so much. It’s a fantastic chance to use the experiences that I have formed in order to help improve the employment prospects of the students at Leeds Beckett University.”
Corecom plan to deliver more employability sessions in the New Year covering similar topics which will help to distinguish candidates from the rest. The company is also looking at the opportunity for their workshops to be added to Leeds Beckett University’s curriculum, as they are beneficial to students and are important in enabling students to receive necessary education in employability.
