BIBoss: It’s about Small Data, Stupid
We’ve been busy making arrangements for the September BIBoss networking event for Business Intelligence Professionals which will take place on 10 September at 6.00pm in Central Leeds. We’ll be welcoming BI professionals from the likes of Sky, Jet2, Morrisons and Aviva.
We’re delighted to announce that we’ve organised Neil Dunlop, Solution Architect at William Hill and Ben Foster, Senior Java Developer at Rockshore Limited as our Guest Speakers. As a duo they will be delivering a presentation titled ‘It’s about Small Data, Stupid.’ Both have experienced situations where Big Data is crucial to success, but far more frequently have experienced situations where data is being collected for the sake of it rather than due to any concrete need.
Neil has more than 15 years’ experience of working in a wide variety of technical environments. He has experience of working in Software Development, Coaching, Mentoring, Team Leading and Product Management roles. Ben has five years’ experience working with Big Data and development. Ben has worked in Business Intelligence Developer roles for Irwin Mitchell, Maternaut and Jet2.com. More recently, Ben has spent nearly two years as a Senior Java Developer at Rockshore Limited.
When asked to sum up their presentation, Neil and Ben said:
“It’s not the size that matters, but what you do with it. With the unstoppable rise of Big Data it’s easy to lose sight of the wider picture. The hard truth is, data is only valuable if you do something with it.
“The avalanche of data being collected by many companies means the average employee struggles to make sense of what they see. We need an effective way to turn down the digital noise and listen for the signals. We need to deliver accurate, relevant, actionable information so they can make effective decisions in real-time. In short, we need Small Data.
“With Small Data, relevance, accuracy, context, speed and of course, size, are king. Information is delivered to the right people at the right time to tell them what is happening right now, allowing them to do something about it, right now.
“We aim to demonstrate, through a simple use case, the key principles and technologies of a Small Data system, providing an overview of Small Data, the principles behind the concept and an examination of the key software components of the system.”
The purpose of BIBoss is to create a unique platform for Senior BI Professionals all over Yorkshire to debate, discuss hot topics, learn from reputable and established speakers and network with like-minded individuals.
